Willendorf Goddess

Willendorf GoddessThe Venus of Willendorf, also known as the Goddess of Willendorf, is an 11 cm (4.3 in) high statuette of a female figure estimated to have been made between 22,000 and 21,000 BCE. It was discovered in 1908 by archaeologist Josef Szombathy at a paleolithic site near Willendorf, a village in Lower Austria near the city of Krems. It is carved from an oolitic limestone that is not local to the area, and tinted with red ochre.

Since this figure's discovery and naming, several similar statuettes and other forms of art have been discovered.  People who follow the traditions of goddess spirituality revere this figure because it is thought to give evidence of a Goddess culture in prehistoric Europe. It is thought that this was a gentle matriarchal agrarian society, coexisting peacefully with nature, before the more warlike male dominated empires began to emerge. It is to be hoped that we could rediscover the wisdom of living in such a society again.

Our Goddess statuettes stand approx 2 1/4 inches tall and are hand carved from gemstone materials.  They are available in Red Aventurine (shown at top), Tigereye, Dalmatian Jasper, Unakite,  Earth Tone Jasper (shown at bottom), Green Aventurine, and Rhodonite.
